FEATURED ARTICLE
Preparation of A Church Master Plan by Robert C. Foreman

One of the most important steps that a church or any developer of a piece of property should take is to develop a master plan of the site. Churches usually expand in phases over a period of years. So whether you are expanding an existing facility or starting on an undeveloped site, you need a master plan to determine the basic site layout so future growth will take place in an orderly and logical fashion. Site planning is a process that is best done by professionals who are trained and experienced in this field.

1. Select an Architect or Design Professional, qualified in church site design, to develop the Site Master Plan.
2. Gather site information (topographic, boundary and site conditions survey, including zoning, buffers, setbacks, height limits, existing structures, drives, parking, curb cuts, utilities and other relevant site information).
3. Gather community information as needed (population trends, demographics, traffic information and location of other nearby churches).
4. Gather church information (Worship and Sunday School attendance records and growth projections, church ministries, programs and space needs).
5. Meet with the Designer to review facility needs, site conditions and limitations. Review best locations for expansion and analyze parking and traffic issues. Come to a mutual understanding with the Designer of church’s goals and needs.
6. Designer presents preliminary recommendations and ideas. Committee responds to Designer’s questions and ideas. Committee evaluates Designer’s proposed conceptual solutions.
7. Committee and designer review site analysis findings and narrow down possible solutions.
8. Committee reviews Designer’s final recommendations and approves final drafts of Master Site Plan.
9. Design Professional prepares the final Site Master Plan document.
10. Master Site Plan is presented to the church congregation.
