Outdoor Classroom

The purpose of this space is to allow students to experience nature.  The table below shows some goals, activities and level of development that can be used with this outdoor space.

Level of Development Goals Activities
Cognitive Development Understanding outdoor life Observe animals and insects (Life cycles, characteristics, ect.)
  Understanding plant growth Plant and observe the growth patterns of different flowers and plants.
  Understanding weather cycles Observe and list the changes seen when a storm approaches (under the cover)
  Understanding growth rates Measure and keep records of plant growth. 

Calculate the percentage of seeds that germinate after planting.

Behavioral Development Understanding responsibility and ownership Assign students the responsibility of maintaining different parts of the outdoor area.
  Understand the benefits of natural environments Teach students to behave appropriately in an outdoor setting
Affective Development Provide a soothing, yet interesting natural environment Students will reflect on observations and write about what they observe
